A Geely With Attitude

AS we have reported many times before, the Crossover segment of the market is a fascinating one.

Almost every manufacturer has catered for the trend and there is a Crossover variant in all line-ups.  And there has not only been activity on the premium end of the scale, but on the more affordable side too.

Just take this for example, the Geely LC Cross. The Chinese automakers have always been big on value, this is how they plan to sway buyers’ attention from the more established players on the market.

This is the case with the LC Cross, arguably the most affordable Crossover on the market today. The range-topping GT model comes in at a very reasonable R114 990.

And for that you get a host of impressive standard features, you really feel like you are getting bang for your buck. It’s got a six-speaker audio system, MP3 compatibility, alloy wheels, air-conditioning, electric windows front and rear and central locking.

Safety is imperative in any car you buy, given the state of SA’s roads. And this LC Cross GT is fully loaded on this front too. You get anti-lock brakes and electronic brake force distribution across the range. The GT has rear park assist and six airbags.

Power comes from a 1.3-litre engine which produces 63kW and 110Nm of torque. This is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

On the exterior, one cannot help but feel charmed by the cute looks of the LC Cross. It comes across as a baby off-roader, thanks to its rugged body cladding, elevated position and rear mounted spare wheel.

The entry-level GS model goes for R102 990 and the middle-range GL model will cost R109 990.

If you’re after a Crossover, the LC Cross represents an affordable way into the niche.
