Ajax coach, De Haan awarded coach of the month

Ajax Cape Town coach Foppe De Haan won the Absa Coach of the Month award for February but said they did nothing special last month, just hard grafting.

“Nah, we trained well and had a few good games. The game against Chiefs stood out for me. The stadium was full, the football was good, I was very happy with that, it was a real good game,” he said.

Ajax beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 courtesy of a Brent Careless penalty, but that game was played in January. In February Ajax won four consecutive matches including a seven goal thriller against neighbours Santos which they won 4-3.

“We hope to continue that way, win games and play good football. I am very happy with this award because it shows appreciation for what we do. We work on our style and we try to win games,” he said.

Hans Vonk is one of the oldest players in the PSL, but De Haan says the 41-year old shot-stopper is one of the most important players at Ikamva, along with strikers Thulani Serero and Kama Billiat.

“Vonk has the experience and the passion. He is a good goalie and a good captain. He encourages the other players and is a good role model. Granwald Scott is also a very good player.”

“I moved him from attacking midfield to defensive midfield and he is doing really well. Clayton Daniels has matured this season. He gets better with every game and is important to our defence.”

“Thulani is not an average player. He has excellent vision, good control, he creates goals and he can score. He needs to be stronger physically and he will be even better. Billiat is also a very good youngster and with the proper development these boys will go far,” he said excitedly.

The Cape Town side has 49 points, one less than leaders Orlando Pirates but the former Netherlands under-21 manager is not entirely focused on winning the league title.

“We have done well this season, and we still doing well. We are close to it so we must fight for it, but there is no pressure or any expectations on us. We are playing each game as it comes, that’s it,” De Haan said with a matter-of-fact tone.

On Wednesday, March 16, the two title chasers clash at the Cape Town stadium in an Absa Premiership match.PSL
