At Erica Park in Belhar, Cape Town

AJAX Cape Town produced a spirited fight to win their fifth title in the Metropolitan Under-19 Premier Cup when the narrowly beat Berea Albion 5-4 in penalty shootout.

The two sides came to this fast flowing final match highly motivated with Ajax looking forward to revive their lost glory in this competition which has been eluded them for the past seven years as they last won the competition in 2008 at the expense of Bloemfontein Celtic whom they beat 6-0 while Berea were looking for their maiden title in their second year appearance.

The young Urban Warriors showed their determination to win this competition when they scored an early goal via Tashreeq Morris, much to the roaring huge fans of the young Urban Warriors who braved the chilly cold weather which accompanied by soft drizzles.

For a little while, the Cape side looked they would easily walked all over the visitors, but it was not meant to be as the Tshwane based-side were equally up to the task, forcing their opponents to fight against their back and it came as no surprise when they saw an equaliser late in the first half via substitute, Daniel Vieira to force the game to 1-1 at break.

The goal seemed to have motivated the Gauteng based side as they came back strongly in the second half, scoring their second goal in the early minutes through Sege Gado to make it 2-1.

The Albion’s lead however did not live for long as Ajax pulled one back, an equaliser via Tashreeq who braced himself to make it 2-2 which brought them closer to achieving their dream to cancelled Hellenic’s six title record of this tournament. For the record, Ajax had won the tournament to close the gap to four titles as opposed to Hellenic who has won it six times.

The second half and extra-time failed to produced scored and the match was decided by penalties which saw the Cape side winning after their goal-keeper, Brendon  Petersen save Berea’s last penalty kick, giving Ajax their fifth Metropolitan Under-19 Premier Cup title which goes along with a floating trophy and an incentive cheque of R35 000.
