The South African National Under 20 Team (Amajita) lost 4-2 to Mali in the opening match of the 17th Orange African U20 Championship.
The match was played the Dobsonville Stadium in Dobsonville, Johannesburg.
Kick off was at 12:00.
Mali’s Doumbia Cheick Mc opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the game and Lucky Nguzana equalised for the hosts in the 20th minute, Nguzana was eventually voted Man of the Match.
Coulibali Kalifa then scored the first of his brace in the 22nd minute and again in the 37th minute; Diallo Ibrahama scored in the 67th to make it 4-1 to Mali.
Amajita staged what would eventually be an unsuccessful come back with Nguzana scoring his second goal in the 78th minute.
South Africa’s Head Coach Maqsood Chenia says he is not happy with the result but impressed by the boys’ fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude.
“I am obviously not happy with the outcome in terms of result but the way the team played throughout the match is enough for me to congratulate them on a good fight; we played well; created a number of chances which we could not convert into goals.
Not that i am complaining but the pitch is not in the best of conditions and that affected us negatively. Going forward I think we need to be more organised defensively;” said Chenia.
South Africa will play Lesotho on Wednesday (20 April 2011) at the Dobsonville Stadium.
