Amajita register victory over Lesotho

THE South African National under 20 Team has defeated neighbours Lesotho 2-1 in the Orange Under 20 Championship’s second group-stage match. Letsie Koapeng and Lucky Nguzana opened the scoring for Amajita in the first half; with Lesotho scoring a solitary goal in the second half from a penalty spot. Nguzana is Amajita’s tournament leading goal scorer with three goals to his name.

The South Africa-Lesotho encounter took place at the Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday (20 April 2011).

In the tournament’s opening match on Sunday (17 April 2011); Amajita lost 4-2 to Mali and Wednesday’s win has helped them better their position in Group A.

Head Coach Maqsood Chenia says he is happy with the result and its significance for the upcoming last group stage match against Egypt.

“This match was of the utmost importance to us; this is a relief for me as you know that we have a recent history with Lesotho that is not very impressive. Going forward; the match against Egypt on Saturday will be the boys’ most difficult challenge yet; but I think it will mostly depend on who wants it more, who is the most motivated and obviously luck will play a big role on the day. They are a very good side that is technically very sound and so it will be a tough match but we will prepare well for the Egyptians,” said Chenia.

Lesotho’s Head Coach Leslie Notsi says the tournament is not over for him and his team yet as they still have a mathematical chance of going through to the next round.

“First of all I would like to congratulate the South Africans on the win; we always knew that it was going to be a tough encounter. Amajita looked motivated and they punished us early in the match; that situation forced us to always chase the match. All we can do now is give support to the boys and motivate them as much as we can; we still have a chance so we will play the next match to win and register a win in the tournament,” said Notsi.

Amajita will play Egypt on Saturday 23 April 2011 at the Dobsonville Stadium.

Kick off is at 12 midday.
