IN what promises to be an exhilarating summer of football, Ardbeg, the Ultimate Islay Malt (recipient of the World’s Best Scotch Award for three years in 2008, 2009 and 2010) has announced its alternative take on the World Cup – Ardbeg Peat Football!
The Distillery will this year pay homage to the peat bogs and muddy sports fields of Islay by bringing to life Ardbeg’s take on football, as part of ‘Ardbeg Day’ on 31st May 2014. Participants will go from clean to dirty as teams play knee-deep on peaty mud pitches to win highly coveted prizes such as the Ardbeg Peat Football trophy.
Referred to by the Islay locals simply as “football”, Ardbeg will host Peat Football matches at prestigious venues around the world, welcoming any player courageous enough to compete in the ultimate, mud-splattering test of endurance and dedication.
Mickey Heads, voted Manager of the Year 2013 of a Scottish Distillery, explained: “Every year we welcome hundreds of our fans from all over the world to the distillery on Ardbeg Day. This year we’re taking Ardbeg Peat Football to the world, with parties from Taipei to San Francisco to London. To be honest, the boys at the Distillery play football in the peat every week – I don’t know what all the fuss is about!
“Today we’ve posted details on ardbeg.com and contacted all the Committee members to tell them what we are planning. Fans of the peatiest and most complex of all the Islay malts are invited to compete at their nearest Ardbeg Peat Football match, or simply come along to cheer a friend on. It is going to be a great day as we’ll be surrounded by the things we love most – peat and whisky!”
The Peat Football competition will form part of the celebrations planned for May 31 at Ardbeg Distillery and around the world at Ardbeg Embassies and event venues.
