THE SOUTH AFRICAN Kids Golf will host the World Qualifier Tournament gives junior golfers an opportunity to qualify in order to compete in the top annual international tournaments held in the USA and Scotland.

This was confirmed by Belinda Stevens, the organization’s Executive Committee, after successful negotiations for the rights to hold the massive WQT.

SA Kids Golf, formerly known as the “Little Kids Golf” is a non-profit organization that is recognized by the South African Junior Golf Foundation(SAJGF)  and is supported by the Professional Golfer Association(PGA) of South  Africa and has been formed to promote golf on junior golfers between the ages 4 and 12.

This organization was formed by volunteers, who realized that in order to participate internationally, it is vital to stage junior golf competitions across South Africa as it is in the USA, the European Union and Asia.

“This non-profit organization has sanctioned the hosting of eighteen golf tournaments throughout our country for 2011. These tournaments typically have over 100 children competing every month. Since 2005 more than 500 golfing kids have participated in our tournaments and many of them have proudly represented our country by participating in the US Kids Golf World Championships, the US Kids Golf, the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships, Callaway Golf Junior World Champions and the Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championships”, said Stevens

Among the Mzansi kids who have waved the South African flag in as far as the States in the US Kids World Championship that took place earlier this year include the 8- year old Caityl Macnab who competed in the girl’s category.

Sunday, November 14 saw children from all over South Africa competing in the inaugural Tournament which was held at one of the best golf courses, Woodhill Golf Estate, Pretoria. “The tournament was a great success, the children had a great time, the scores were good, and they could not wait to play in the next tournament”, added Stevens.

The SA Kids Golf will not only be hosting the WQT, its Committee has also approved the proposal that an African Open Kids Golf Tournament which will either be held in 2012, with the intention of inviting young golfers from the USA, the EU, and Asia to participate. They are hoping that this competition will happen in South Africa.

Furthermore, to eliminate the stereotype that is still living amongst most that golf is a sport for only rich people; this organization has adopted a strategy dubbed “golf-buddy system” which aims to provide support to golfing kids coming from disadvantaged families. This will provide for a system where previously well-used golf equipment will be donated to junior golfers to grant them an opportunity to gain access and enjoy the game of golf.

A Pre-Christmas challenge is set to take place in one of the best Golf Courses in SA, Pebble Rock Golf Course, on December 5, from 11am to 5pm and all applications are welcome from all over the country.

If you would like to enter your child on a try-out, you can contact Warren Telfer, by email at on or before November 25.
