Baroka suffer play-off setback

A 1-0 defeat at home to Witbank Spurs at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday has seen Baroka FC slipping out of the top three NFD bracket.

The defeat was a second consecutive one for the Limpopo team, following their 2-1 reverse to Chippa United last weekend, and leaves Sello Chokoe’s rookie side in fourth spot on the standings.

The only goal of the game in Polokwane came in the final 10 minutes of the match and was scored by Peter Mubayiwa, following some excellent build-up play between Dumisane Gamede and Dumisani Tau.

Baroka’s setback worked to Jomo Cosmos’ advantage, Ezenkosi moving above the Limpopo side on goal difference and into third position after they drew 1-1 with Vasco da Gama at the Makhulong Stadium.

The home side were on the score-sheet first, but not at the end of the field they would have been hoping for as Gladwin Shitolo put the ball in his own net after 15 minutes.

But Cosmos made sure they were to finish the game with a point in the bag when Pentjie Zulu netted midway through the second stanza.

Down in Cape Town, Thanda Royal Zulu kept their outstanding form going with a hard-fought 1-0 win over FC Cape Town at the NNK Rugby Stadium, with Phumelele ‘Ace’ Bhengu again doing the business for the KZN side.

In the day’s other action, it was Roses United who emerged 3-0 winners from their match against fellow relegation candidates Blackburn Rovers.

The victory at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium takes 15th placed Roses to within seven points of Maluti FET College, who are away to United FC, one of three NFD matches to look forward to on Sunday.
