Big guns avoid each other in the Telkom quarters

The draw for the 2014 Telkom Knockout (TKO) quarterfinals took place at the Premier Soccer League (PSL) offices yesterday.

The draw was hosted by PSL General Manager of Football, Derek Blanckensee, with the teams selected out of two pots. Also in

attendance were player representatives from the eight clubs.

The first bowl was made up of the four seeded sides (Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates – clubs that

achieved highest four positions in the 2013/14 season), with the remaining four teams (SuperSport United, Platinum Stars, AmaZulu and Ajax Cape Town) going into the second bowl. A third bowl was used to determine which sides are to play their matches at home.

After a look back at the highlights from the first round, that saw 20 goals in eight matches over the past weekend, it was time for the serious business of the last eight draw.

The first fixture to pop up was a Johannesburg-Pretoria cross Gauteng battle, with Bidvest Wits drawn to play SuperSport United at home, a match that will see Clever Boys mentor Gavin Hunt up against the club he guided to three league titles.

Next out the bowl were Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu, the match scheduled to take place at the Brazilians’ home ground.

2011 TKO champions Orlando Pirates will have home comforts for their quarter-final encounter, which will see Roger De Sa returning to his former employers, this time with his Ajax Cape Town team.

Defending champions Platinum Stars will face 2010 TKO champions Kaizer Chiefs, the team they beat in the 2013 TKO semi-finals, with AmaKhosi being handed home ground advantage.

TKO2014 quarter-final fixtures as follows:

Bidvest Wits v SuperSport United

Mamelodi Sundowns v AmaZulu

Orlando Pirates v Ajax Cape Town

Kaizer Chiefs v Platinum Stars
