THE opening day of the new NFD season saw a win for Black Aces and draws for each of Cosmos, Witbank Spurs, Blackburn Rovers and Thanda Royal Zulu.
The first game of the day took place at the Jo’burg Stadium, where Jomo Cosmos kicked off their return to the NFD with a draw against Witbank Spurs.
The match saw the Ezenkosi coming from two goals down to secure a point as the match ended 2-2.
The Mpumalanga side took a one goal advantage into the break thanks to Dumi Gamede’s free kick.
Spurs doubled the lead shortly after the restart when Lethu Zwane’s shot was deflected into the net.
But Cosmos hit back with a goal midway through the first half as Sizwe Maseko rifled home a free kick. Madotha Motha ensured a share of the spoils with 10 minutes to go when tapped in a cross from close range.
Cosmos team manager Gerald Mtshali says that considering the way the game went, Ezenkosi were satisfied with the outcome.
“We’re fairly happy seeing that it was our first game and that we had a lot of new players, including the under-23 players.
“You look to try and win at home, but to at least get a point is not the worst result.
“Spurs sat back after they scored their goals and it made it hard for us to create chances. After we scored our second goal they had eight players back in defence!” Mtashali told PSL.co.za.
The second match took place a bit later on in the evening down in East London, where the all-coastal clash between hosts Blackburn Rovers and Thanda Royal Zulu also ended all square.
The 1-1 was an unsurprising result considering that Rovers ended last season in fourth spot and Thanda in third.
In the final match on Saturday Santos were beaten 1-0 by Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Athlone Stadium.-www.psl.co.za
