SA promoter Branco Milenkovic has secured the rights to stage the IBF junior featherweight title fight between Takalani Ndlovu and Canadian Steve Molitor.
Milenkovic, of Branco Sports Productions, outbid Top Rank in the race to present the bout. He has until April 18 to do so and the venue will certainly be in South Africa.
The successful bid was $320 000 (approximately R2,3 million). Top Rank, one of the most powerful boxing promotion companies in the world, offered $227 000 (approximately R 1,7 million).
The purse bids were held at the IBF headquarters in New Jersey on Tuesday after Top Rank had defaulted on their November 30 winning bid of $215 000.
The IBF rescheduled the bid when Top Rank failed to stage the fight within 90 days. The promoters had scheduled the fight for March 19, which fell outside the deadline by almost a month.
Milenkovic’s winning bid will force Molitor to come to South Africa, improving Ndlovu’s chance of dethroning the champion, who has beaten the South African twice.
Milenkovic also outbid Top Rank to stage the fight between Nkosinathi Joyi and Raul Garcia for the IBF mini-flyweight title last year.
