Celtic kiss Vodacom goodbye to answer MTN's call

MTN South Africa is yet again setting the Premiership ablaze after adding Bloemfontein Celtic, popularly known as “Phunya Sele Sele” to its football stable and re-affirms its commitment to this country’s beautiful game.

At the club’s football kit launch, MTN confirmed that it has signed a deal to sponsor local football giants, Bloemfontein Celtic – the team that is considered amongst the top three in terms of their dedicated supporter base, Siwelele. This agreement makes MTN the title sponsor of the Bloemfontein-based club and allows it to further extend the Ayoba experience to its football-loving customers.

Serame Taukobong, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN SA says: “The Free State region is one of MTN’s key business focus areas and we are delighted by the Office of the Premier’s commitment to the club. The involvement of the three parties in this deal is a clear indication that private public partnerships (PPPs) are indeed on the way to fruition.”

The sponsorship deal demonstrates MTN’s continued passion, commitment and support for the development of football in South Africa, with addition of Bloemfontein Celtic to the pool of other Premiership sides also sponsored by MTN in Ajax Cape Town and Lamontville Golden Arrows and First Division side, Black Leopards.

Taukobong adds: “We are very pleased about our new partnership with Bloemfontein Celtic because the club has one of, if not, the most passionate group of supporters in the country. This fits perfectly with our key business focus of rewarding our loyal subscribers through customer-centric initiatives because they are also the die-hard football fans – who tirelessly support their clubs irrespective of the result.

“To this end, MTN has developed exciting fan-based initiatives for its subscribers and supporters of football, including the exciting Last Fan Standing competition in the MTN8 tournament and the Y’ello Dome at league matches of MTN sponsored teams, where fans can enjoy a variety of pre-match entertainment. We believe the lively, singing Siwelele crowd will enjoy having these benefits as one of the MTN sponsored teams.”

Bloemfontein Celtic has improved over the past few seasons, having finished their last three seasons in 11th, 14th and sixth place in the Premiership. Celtic will hence forth, use the power of “AYOBA” when they take the field, starting with their game against Golden Arrows on Sunday, 17 October 2010, which will be an MTN Derby. Currently lying sixth on the PSL log table, Bloemfontein Celtic look set to have a solid season having won two and lost two matches so far.

Bloemfontein Celtic CEO Ikie Augousti echoed the sentiments of Serame Taukobong, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN SA: “Today is an historic occasion for both Bloemfontein Celtic and MTN, as we embark on a relationship and partnership that I am confident will reap rewards and sustained success and excellence. Bloemfontein Celtic has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years and a strong corporate title sponsor of the ilk of MTN will see the club grow even further; become more entrenched in the consciousness of football lovers in the country.

“We are an ambitious team and the club sincerely feels that it could be one of the most dominant teams in the country over the next few years and we are excited and overjoyed at the prospect of joining hands with telecommunication giants MTN. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome MTN to the Siwelele family.”

Taukobong believes that the sponsorship will further assist MTN to achieving its objective of continuously giving back to the communities where it operates. Also, through this partnership, the organisation wants to – in future – build on what it has accomplished through the local football sponsorships as well as the World Cup.
