BLOEMFONTEIN Celtic took a step closer to a top eight finish in the Absa Premiership with their 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates at the
Free State Stadium on Monday evening.
Frank Mhango scored a goal and cleared the ball off the line as the Phunye Sele Sele put out a dominating display to do a season
double over the Buccaneers.
Pirates had only procured one win in their last three league encounters, while the home side had failed to win a match in the same number of games.
Celtic were left appealing a penalty after just four minutes when they felt Daine Klate handled the ball after clearing it away from the line.
The ball was bogged down in the middle of the park for a large part of the opening 20 minutes of the fixture and it saw Pirates’ first chance from Thamsanqa Gabuza skip wide of Patrick Tignyemb.
Ernst Middendorp’s men deservingly took the lead on 27 minutes when Gabadinho Mhango schemed his marker and fired in a left-footed drive into the roof of the net.
Siwelele continued to dominate proceedings in the encounter but there was little action happening in front of goal on either end of the park.
In the closing of the half, Musa Nyatama and Mhango were involved in some quick one-two play and it caused problems for Pirates’
defence, however, play was stopped for an offside call.
Celtic could have had a penalty at the restart when Sifiso Myeni took the ball off Vuyani Ntanga’s feet. The Bucs man connected with the player more than the ball, although nothing was given.
A chance then fell to the hosts on 54 minutes when Nyatama took a shot from range. It stung the palms of Senzo Meyiwa and the best he could do was to grab ahold of the ball on the second attempt.
Mhango denied Pirates of changing the scoreline to 1-1 on 69 minutes when Ayanda Gcaba connected onto a corner kick and headed it towards goal, but the Malawian pint-sized player did well to clear it off the line.
Celtic had the ball in the back of net deep inside stoppages when Lerato Manzini toe-poked it in from inside the box, only to see it ruled out for offside.
