CHIPPA United capped an outstanding season by clinching automatic promotion to the National First Division after beating Durban Stars 1-0 in front of their home fans yesterday, to finish at the top of the Coastal Group in the 2011 Vodacom League National Play-offs in Cape Town.
Bathed in glorious sunshine at the University of the Western Cape Stadium, Diego Brown’s first half goal brought the excitable crowd to its feet and proved sufficient to realise the dream of playing in the NFD next season, a remarkable achievement for a team that was only established less than two years ago. The victory also puts them in line to be crowned national champions of the 2011 Vodacom League when they come up against Inland Group winners, Sevutsa Stars, in the grand final on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Buffalo FC did all that they could to keep alive their hopes of edging past Chippa at the final hurdle by defeating Real Madrid 3-1 at a packed Philippi Stadium, though in the end it proved futile. Goals by Mfondo Bonyongo and a pair from Solomzi Makholwa were enough to ensure Buffalo return to the Eastern Cape with their heads held high, while Tshepo Modise’s first half effort briefly kept Real in the game.
The final of the 2011 Vodacom League National Play-Offs between Sevutsa Stars of Mpumalanga, and Chippa United, representing the Western Cape, kicks off at Philippi Stadium at 3pm.-Backpagepix
