The 4th Annual Soweto Comedy Festival kicks off at Ster-Kinekor Theatres in Maponya Mall from October 28 to 31, 2010.Novices and acclaimed comedians will grace the fest such as    Young Gunz of SA Comedy and SA’s top notch comedians.

The Young Gunz team is Skhumba Hlophe, Lwando Mhlakatha, Alex Kunene, Omer Mugbud, Jay Boogie, Mojak Lehoko, Dean Schroder, Thobie Khanyile, Lihle Lindzy, Thato Mataboge, Smowkey Nyembe, Themba Nhlapho and Dillian Oliphant.

Living true to its adage “the one comedy festival where you are guaranteed fresh comedy”, this promises fireworks as novices will be trying to outsmart their senior counterparts. That’s the culture of the festival and that’s because each year the fest introduces new talent through the Young Gunz brand, says Mulaudzi.

This attitude sets the mood for the entire festival because the main acts, Nubreed Comedy All Stars – Thomas Gumede, Siya-B Radebe, Chris Mapane, Nqoba Ngcobo, Judy Jake, Trevor Gumbi and Simmi Arref are under pressure to double their efforts using their experience on the comedy field and talent to not only write jokes that can work anywhere in the world, but jokes that are mainly based on life.

“These comedians’ sets are based on their lives. That’s what happens when a comedian matures; you tend to write comedy about your life because only that guarantees fresh and unique comedy,” quips Mulaudzi in a serious tone for a change. The established acts are chosen from the list of top comedians in South Africa. Not only have these guys built a name for themselves locally, but they have presence on the international comedy scene.

Roni Modimola has done London and other cities in the world, so has Conrad Koch, internationally renowned ventriloquist, and Joey Rasdien, international known comic and star of hit international movies like Bunny Chow. These guys are the cherry on top because they bring the heavyweight feel to the festival as they are heavyweight comedians in the country.

This year’s host, producer and founder of the festival, Kedibone Mulaudzi, is just what the doctor ordered. Having shared the stage with likes of Chris Rock and being the regular host of the weekly Soweto Premium Comedy Nights at The Oz Pub in Moletsane he is just the right clown to host the festival.

Apart from comedy, travel packages will see people touring Soweto, Bungee Jumping in Soweto, watching movies at Ster Kinekor, having a meal in Soweto and finally watching world class comedy at the Soweto Comedy Festival.

This year’s festival promises nothing less than fireworks (not actual fireworks people!). The festival has grown in the last 4 years. The last 3 years’ shows were sold out, so people are advised to get their tickets today to avoid disappointment as tickets are limited.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is the Soweto Comedy Festival.

Tickets are from R100 to R150 at Computicket.
