Jonathan Armogam’s 40th minute sending off was instrumental in Vasco da Gama’s 1-0 loss to Bloemfontein Celtic at Athlone on Tuesday, says coach Carlos das Neves.
Armogam received two yellow cards – the first one an obvious one for a professional foul.
But the second was perhaps a bit harsh – the Vasco winger got booked for a challenge with keeper Patrick Tignyemb – the two players collided when the shot stopper came rushing out of his box to try and stop Armogam from getting on the end of a through ball on goal.
“This was a key game for us, a home game against Celtic, but we blew it, but having 10 men for 45 minutes once again,” das Neves said after the match.
“The card changed everything. I wasn’t happy with the play up to then – we were giving away possession too easily with some sloppy passes – Celtic’s two best chances before Johnny got sent off was from mistakes by us
“You can’t play football with 10 men for over 45 minutes – you’re fighting a losing battle. “
Lennox Bacela scored the only goal in the 65th minute, after receiving a pass from Nathan Paulse.
