De Sa: Sundowns are a real threat

BIDVEST Wits coach, Roger de Sa said Mamelodi Sundown’s hunger to win trophies this season cannot be underestimated.

The two sides will meet in the Nedbank Cup last 16 at the BidVest Stadium on Sunday.

“They (Sundowns) are a good and solid side, they have many quality players. They want results, they want to win trophies and that can’t be underestimated. At the moment, they are favourites to win the League because of the quality and depth they have,” De Sa said.

The last time the two sides met was on a league game where BidVest Wits staged a late comeback through their latest talent, Muhammed Patel to claim a 1-all draw.

“We can’t read much from the draw we had with them before, we scored in the last seconds and the youngster scored. To be honest, we were a bit lucky.

“We playing against a shrewd Sundowns teams, you saw what they did to Powerlines so we will be careful and on our toes.”

Injuries and form

BidVest Wits has been rocked by a spate of injuries that has seen De Sa having to change his team often this season. This, he said, poses a bigger danger to their campaign this season.

BidVest Wits are of course no strangers to this competition – they won it back in 2009 against Amazulu in the inaugural game at the majestic FNB Stadium (then Soccer City).

“We are experiencing a bit of a rough time in the league at the moment, but we are hoping that things will improve. We have many injuries and we are missing a few players but we won’t make excuses. We have many injuries – broken arms, broken legs, that’s not an excuse but a fact.

“Everyone has problems so we just have to get on with life. There are some players who were on song who are now injured and will only be available next season. That’s sad, but life must go on,” he added.

In the other last 16 matches, Orlando Pirates welcome Free State Stars at the Orlando Stadium at 6pm with AmaZulu entertaining the National First Division side, Witbank Spurs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium at 8pm while the Vodacom League side, Roses United welcoming Santos at the Botshabelo Stadium on Sunday at 3pm.-PSL
