Defying gravity at The Centre for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics

EVER wondered what it feels like to walk on air? To defy gravity? The Centre for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in Rosebank now offers one of South Africa’s first anti-gravity treadmills. The Alter-G Anti Gravity Treadmill is an invaluable rehabilitation aid for sports injuries, offering state of the art technology to speed up effective rehabilitation.

“This one-of-a kind machine allows patients to resume physical activity earlier in the recovery process as it delivers precise partial weight bearing,” says Doctor Mark Ferguson, leading Sports Orthopaedic Surgeon and the Centre’s Founding Director.  “By reducing a large portion of your body weight, the Alter G strengthens and improves the coordination of muscles, promoting a full range of motion while minimising stress and enabling patients to maximise fitness on the often long road to recovery.”

The Centre has helped some of our biggest sports starts return to the top of their game, including Matthew Booth, one of Bafana Bafana’s defenders. Booth used the Alter-G Anti Gravity Treadmill just 3 months after a season-ending knee injury.

“My impression of the machine was excellent,” says Booth. “Not only did it help me with my cardio fitness, mentally it felt great to start to run.” With the weight off Booth’s injured leg he could, in practice and sensation, run injury free.

“When you have the opportunity to defy gravity, you give yourself the chance to recover better and train like you never have done before,” says Dr. Ferguson. “In short, with such an extensive post-injury rehabilitation programme at the Centre for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics, we’ll have you back doing what you love, before you thought it possible.”

The Centre for Sports Medicine is one of Netcare’s “Centres of Excellence”. It offers a range of specialists in orthopaedics, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiology, biokinetics and sports medicine at a single well-equipped treatment centre, catering for both specialist sportsmen and the general public.
