Dino debut strike downs Pirates

SUPERSPORT United moved up to fourth place on the Absa Premiership table when they defeated Orlando Pirates 2-1 at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Substitutes Mame Niang and Dino Ndlovu scored for Cavin Johnson’s side while Happy Jele scored a late consolation for the Buccaneers.

Pirates started brightly but had to wait until the 20th minute to get a clear shot at goal when Kermit Erasmus broke free on the right, but he dragged his low shot across goal and wide of the far post.

Two minutes later Daine Klate’s cross found Sifiso Myeni unmarked on the right side of the box but his shot was expertly turned around the post by Ronwen Williams.

SuperSport threatened from a corner in the 27th minute when Bennet Chenene delivered a dangerous ball into the near post, but Thabo Matlaba made a rushed clearance with players lining up behind him.

Williams pulled off another spectacular one-handed save eight minutes later, diving low to his right to push Andile Jali’s powerful long range effort wide of the post.

Jali had another opportunity in the 43rd minute when the ball fell for him just outside the box, but this time he fired wide of the target.

The Buccaneers had two good opportunities in added time but Klate saw his effort deflected over the crossbar by Diouf, while Erasmus was denied by the underside of the crossbar.

The first chance of the second half fell for Thabo Matlaba in the 54th minute when he created some space outside the box, but his show flew over the crossbar.

SuperSport snatched the lead just two minutes later when halftime substitute Niang buried the rebound after his initial header was pushed onto the upright by Meyiwa.

Pirates tried to fight back but Oupa Manyisa fired over the target in the 58th minute, while Thandani Ntshumayelo also shot narrowly wide in the 65th minute.

Matsatsantsa doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Ndlovu nodded home from close range, connecting with a cross from Sibusiso Khumalo.

With Pirates pushing forward in search of a goal, Bradley Grobler came close to punishing them in the 83rd minute, but Meyiwa pulled off a good save to block his shot at the near post.

Khethokwakhe Masuku, who came on as substitute, delivered some dangerous cross from the right but Bacela headed wide in the 84th minute, while Klate was also unable to steer the ball towards the target a minute later.

Roger De Sa’s side did eventually pull one goal back as Mor Diouf’s clearance deflected off Jele and into the back of the net in the first minute of added time, but SuperSport were able to hold on for the win.
