THE South African flag was raised high as the talented swimming youth got to a fast start at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa. Mzansi kicked off the competition with three gold and two bronze medals at the Tuana’imato Sports Facility today.
In the closely contested 50m butterfly race, Zane Waddell came out tops in 24.52 ahead of Australia’s Brayden McCarthy in 24.90 and England’s Lewis Clough in 24.94.
Erin Gallagher was victorious in the 50m butterfly, claiming the top spot in 27.20, while Australia’s Lucia Lassman and Gemma Cooney finished in second and third place in 27.50 and 27.52 respectively.
The Mzansi mixed 4 x 50m medley team made it three gold medals ahead of New Zealand and Northern Ireland.
Nathania van Niekerk was happy with her bronze medal winning performance in the 100m backstroke, clocking a quick 1:03.00, with the gold and silver medals going to New Zealand’s Bobbi Gichard and Gabrielle Fa’amausili in 1:00.51 and 1:00.86 respectively.
South Africa’s second bronze medal was won by Brendan Levy in the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:02.19, while the gold went to New Zealand’s Wilrich Coetzee in 2:01.85 and the silver to India’s Supriya Mondal in 2:01.94.
