Gauteng only needed 38 overs to reach the 171-run target set for them, and it was thanks mainly to a good 56 runs by their SA under-19 opening batsman, Ryan Rickelton.

He put on a first wicket partnership of 73 with Grant Roelofsen (22) and once they were out, the good work was carried on by their captain Marques Ackerman (28), ensuring a comfortable win in the end.

The pick of the Gauteng bowlers was medium-pacer Linaldo Phillips, who took 3/18, and spinner Ndumiso Mvelase (2/37).

The day certainly belonged to the batsmen. There were no fewer than 13 half centuries scored on the day, with the biggest scores coming from Border’s Mncedisi Malika, who made 84 against Limpopo; Koot Pienaar of Free State, who made 85 against Northwest and Michael Hay of KwaZulu-Natal who was 75 not out in his side’s eight wicket win over Boland.

Northwest beat Eastern Province on Sunday to notch up their fourth win of the week – their best performance at the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week for some time.
