Harrison: We need to focus on survival

AHEAD of their clash with Orlando Pirates, Chippa United coach Mark Harrison is concerned with the way his side have been giving away early goals.

Harrison has been in charge for three games now, and has seen his side conceding an early goal on each occasion.

Against Moroka Swallows, the Chilli Boys went behind after just three minutes before coming back to win 2-1. In the following game, away to Platinum Stars, Chippa were 1-0 down after just five minutes, but equalised midway through the second half to earn a point.

Against Ajax Cape Town in Saturday night’s hard-fought Cape derby, Harrison again saw his side on the back-foot through an early goal as Mabuthi Khenyeza fired Ajax ahead after 12 minutes.

It’s an issue that Harrison will no doubt be addressing as Chippa prepare for Tuesday night’s encounter with the Buccaneers in Soweto.

“The three games I have been involved in now we have started so slow. Every game we give away a silly goal. At least today it was 15 minutes instead of two. But we give away a stupid goal in the first 15, 20 minutes and then we have to fight our way back into the game.

“Second half we dominated the game, I know they had a man (Abia Nale) set off midway through, but by then the pace had already been set.

“First 20, 25 minutes they were better than us and deserved to be one goal up and then we got the equaliser and I think we possibly deserved to win it in the end,” he said.

After the Pirates game, the PSL rookies face matches against Tuks and then AmaZulu as they look to try and pull off a late escape act.

With Absa Premiership survival at stake, no extra motivation should be needed and Harrison is hoping that his players can step up to the plate and show the necessary big match temperament.

“You play football to play in big games. I know we don’t want to be in a relegation battle, but at least there is a direction, you are fighting for something.

“Its good to go and play in big games. That’s what I say to the players, embrace the moment [in these big games], go and play.”-www.psl.co.za
