SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says the clash against Maritzburg United this Saturday is the biggest game since he’s been in charge of the three-time Absa Premiership champs.
“This is my biggest game since I’ve been here, even bigger than the league winning games we’ve played. It’s really important for us to win this match,” the three-time league winning coach said.
SuperSport are far from being championship contenders as they sit in 13th place with 20 points, 24 less than log leaders Orlando Pirates, and with 11 games to go Hunt is aiming for a spot in the top eight.
“We are not thinking of relegation, it’s not about that. We want to move in to the top eight and this game will give us a chance to start our move up. We only five points away from the eighth team so it’s possible, but we have to start winning,” he said.
The league champs have only scored 16 goals and let in 24 and for the matter-of-fact Hunt the reasons they are struggling is obvious.
“We score too little and concede too many. We’ve also had a few injuries and the usual stuff, but that’s football. There is no other problem with the squad or any player. We just have to score, stop them from scoring and then we’ll win games.”
Maritzburg is two points below SuperSport and Hunt says they, like his team, should not be in this position.
“They have a very good coach. He knows our football and has the experience. For me his side should not be where they are. They have good individual players too and are really good going forward. I don’t know what their problem but they certainly don’t deserve to be there,” the former Hellenic defender said.
“It will be a good match as we both need the points to move up. So I am looking forward to it and so are the players. They know it is a big match and it should be exciting.” -Backpagepix
