Igesund hopes it is lesson learnt

BAFANA Bafana coach Gordon Igesund says the 1-0 defeat to Poland in Warsaw on Friday will have taught his players a lot as they build towards the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations next year.

South Africa looked as though they may hold their hosts to a draw before a late goal from Marcin Komorowski saw them slip to a defeat.

Igesund handed debuts to much talked about left-back Ricardo Nunes and Luvhengo Mungomeni and says the match was an opportunity to grow his pool of players ahead of the continental showpiece.

“I gave a lot of players a run out there, the pitch was quite heavy and the guys were cramping,” Igesund said. “I thought we deserved something from the game, but we didn’t get it and we have to learn from our mistakes on the field.

“But we keep building after this game, when I come to pick my Nations Cup team I am going to better know who is who in the zoo. Tactically we were not bad tonight, we closed them down in the right areas and we made things difficult for them. But the sooner I can get a consistent squad together, and start working on certain things, it will be good for us.” Igesund admits the goal was a poor one to give away, but that his team would have leanrt a lot from the match.

“It was a great test, we played against a very organised team and it showed us a lot. We made one or two errors. I wasn’t happy that we conceded such a sloppy goal at the end.”

Bafana now head to Nairobi for a friendly international against Kenya on Tuesday night.-www.psl.co.za
