It is down to the wires as Absa Premiership's 2011 curtain goes down tonight

THE curtain for the Absa Premiership action on the 2011 calendar will go down today with six matches taking place around the country.

The focus however will be at the Charles Mopeli in Qwa Qwa, Free State and in Atteridgeville’s Lucas Moripe Stadiums where Mamelodi Sundows and SuperSport United take on Free State outfits, Free State Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic respectively.

Both Sundowns and SuperSport (first and second on the log with 28 points each) are expected to wrap the 2011 calendar on top of the 16-clubs log, and they can’t afford to lose in these encounters. Even more good news for the two Tshwane sides is that their closest rivals, Kaizer Chiefs lost their chance to wrap the 2011 on top of the log after they played to a goal-less draw against AmaZulu away at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last night.

The Brazilians frog-jumped Matsatsantsa A Pitori to the top spot after they beat them 3-1 in the past weekend and it remain to be seen as to which of the Tshwane-based outfit will be on top come the end of today.

Against Ea Lla Koto (fifth position with 24 points), Sundowns are very much aware that they have a mountain to climb as the Steve “Koloi” Komphela’s coached side has been doing well lately despite losing 2-1 away to Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium last Saturday.

On the other hand, SuperSport who has lost two matches back to back, first 3-0 to Orlando Pirates, and then 3-1 to arch-rivals Mamelodi Sundowns have a mountain to climb against Celtic.

Celtic (10th position with 19 points) are still in cloud nine after they took Pirates by surprise, narrowly beating them 1-0 in a league match last Sunday at the Free State Stadium.

In another match, relegation threatened Black Leopards will need more than a miracle to beat Ajax Cape Town away at the Cape Town Stadium. With Jomo Cosmos (16th position with 9 points) having played to a 2-2 draw against Santos last night at Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton to close the gap between themselves and Leopards to just one point, Lidoda Duvha (15th position with 10 points) will have to double their effort against Ajax to avoid pressure from Ezenkosi.

The rest of tonight’s fixtures are: Orlando Pirates v Golden Arrows (Orlando), Moroka Swallows v Maritzburg United (Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium) and BidVest Wits v Platinum Stars (BidVest).
