FOOTBALL fans in Limpopo have the reason to smile after three of their top clubs registered some positive results against their opponents.
The biggest surprise was yesterday at Peter Mokaba Stadium when Polokwane narrowly beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 to ease their relegation blues. The victory over Pirates saw the Limpopo side jumped three positions up to the 11th position with 19 points from 18 league matches.
The province’s other two clubs which are campaigning in the National First Division (NFD), Baroka FC and Black Leopards added more good news to the football fanatics when they win their league matches yesterday that saw them to the second and third places respectively.
Baroka beat FC Cape Town 2-0 to move to the second position on the NFD’s 16-clubs log with 36 points from 21 matches, and they are on the same level on points with log leaders Chippa United. For the record, in their recent 10 league matches Baroka who are still to lose a match on the 2014 calendar has collected 21 points out of the possible 30 after winning six matches, drawing three and against Leopards, United FC and Thanda Royal Zulu and losing only one (3-2 to Blackburn Rovers in the first round) which was their last defeat on December 7.
On the other hand Black Leopards has been slowly working their way up to the top, and their 2-0 away to Blackburn Rovers yesterday saw them moved to the third position with 34 points, one point behind both Baroka and Chippa United who are on top of the summit.
Lidoda Duvha’s results are also the replica of Baroka as they managed to collect 21 points out of the possible 30 from 10 league matches. This after they won six matches, drawing three against FC Cape Town, Roses United and Baroka while they lost the other match, a heavily 5-2 to Africa Warriors on January 19.
Even more good news is that David Zulu of Leopards and Baroka’s Gift Motupa are currently leading the NFD’s top goal-scorers charts with 13 and 8 goals respectively. Leopards who face Kaizer Chiefs this coming Sunday (February 23) in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup at the Peter Mokaba Stadium have scored 37 goals with Baroka boasting of 30 goals both from 21 matches.
