PHETOLO Sekome’s 90th minute goal secured a 1-1 draw for Mpumalanga Black Aces against Santos in a Premier Soccer League promotional play-off tie at the Themba Senamela Stadium in Middleburg on Saturday afternoon.
Mpumalanga Black Aces went into the encounter having already secured their spot in South Africa’s top flight, thanks to a goalless draw against Chippa United in midweek.
A carnival atmosphere welcomed the side’s on to the pitch, in what was the final game of the play-offs. The game was also Amazayoni coach Jacob Sakala’s last game in charge of the Mpumalanga side after it was announced that he wouldn’t be leading Aces into the PSL next season.
Santos created the first clear-cut opportunity of the match from a corner-kick in the eighth minute of the game. Brian Onyango lost his marker inside the area before powering a header at goal, his effort though was cleverly cleared off the line.
Despite Santos having the best opportunity of the first half an hour of the encounter, it was the home side who were dominant. Dennis Masina especially was a threat going forward.
Excellent defending from Sachin Dawood denied Tshidiso Mosikidi in the 32nd of the game. Houston Hills laid it on a plate for the Aces midfielder, Dawood though tracked back superbly to stop what was a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Vuyisile Wana found the back of the net on the stroke of halftime, but the midfielder was adjudged to be in an offside position.
Either side had good opportunities to opening the scoring in the first 45, neither side could capitalise though and as a result the first half ended goalless.
Santos had a great opportunity to open the scoring two minutes after the break through Wana. The midfielder found himself unmarked in the area but he could only manage to find the side netting with his resulting effort.
Reginald Mlaba made an immediate impact off the bench forcing Lee Langeveldt into a good save from range in the 48th minute of the match.
Tebogo Masaole gave the People’s Team the lead in the 79th minute of the game. Wana made a run down the left flank before playing a perfect ball into the path of Masaole who tapped in from close range.
Just as it seemed as if Santos have spoiled Amazayoni’s party, second half substitute Phetolo Sekome found the back of the net via a Langeveldt blunder to ignite mass celebration in Middleburg.
