Lucky, Jimmy rally troops

ORLANDO Pirates skipper, Lucky Lekgwathi said there won’t be any traces of complacency in their game when they face Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premiership game this Saturday at the FNB Stadium.

The Buccaneers have been on song lately and, following their triumph over Chiefs last week in the MTN8, Pirates have been touted as the favourites when the two Soweto giants meet at venue fondly referred to as the cathedral of football in South Africa.

“We won’t be complacent; we can’t afford to lose concentration against Kazier Chiefs. Even though we have been doing well and we also beat them, we know they will come at us with everything they have,” the Pirates skipper told

His counterpart, Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau is facing a different challenge. After what has been a torrid week for the Amakhosi, Tau will have to rally his charges to dig deep in their reservoir hoping for a reversal of fortunes Tau, however, warned detractors not to discard their chances.

“I don’t doubt for a second that we can change this situation.

The players are positive; we are all on the same page.

It won’t be easy for us, we will need to be mentally prepared for this one. These things happen in football sometimes,” he said.

“I think there is the general believe amongst the boys that we can win this game and restore our pride. As the coach has said, we won’t make it easy for them; they will have to work hard for 90 minutes.”

He said Saturday’s Soweto Derby will be a test of character for the Glamour Boys.

“This is what differentiates good teams from great teams – their ability to bounce back after a tough spell. We have the capacity to bounce back.”

The last few days have clearly taken its toll in Naturena. After back to back defeats, they only have had two days to do soul-searching ahead of their Absa Premiership against Pirates. They lost to Pirates in the MTN8 Cup final. Three days later, they went down to Ajax Cape Town in a Absa Premiership match in Cape Town.

“We are disappointed but not disillusioned,” the Chiefs skipper told “Saturday is another day, we know our mistakes and we have been working hard to rectify them.”

Lekgwathi said: “The worst thing we can do is to underestimate Chiefs. We (Pirates) have our own goals that we want to achieve this season.”-PSL
