Luvengo names squad for Metropolitan U-20 Cosafa Youth Championships

SOUTH African Under 20 Men’s National Team (Amajita) coach , Solly Luvhengo, has named his final 20-man squad to participate in the Metropolitan COSAFA Under 20 Youth Championship scheduled to take place in Botswana from 1 – 10 December 2011.

The final selection follows an intense eight week-long camp that consisted of trials and training camps.

Luvhengo says he is happy with the outcome of the camp and feels they have come a long way since they got together. The Amajita squad has played several practice matches as well as international friendly matches against Lesotho and Botswana in preparation for the tournament. Both Lesotho and Botswana will also be participating in the COSAFA championship.

Amajita are in Group C along two-time reigning champions, Zambia, Tanzania and Mauritius.

“We are in a very strong group, so this competition needs to be taken seriously. There’s no time to relax going forward, and I believe we can excel beyond the group stages of the tournament. The loss against Lesotho over the weekend is not a setback for the boys as we won two of the three matches we played against them. We learnt some lessons and now we know what to do at the training field to rectify the mistakes we committed in all the matches,” said Luvhengo.

The South Africans depart for Botswana today.

Amajita kicks off their COSAFA campaign against Mauritius on Friday, 2 December at the University Stadium in Gaborone, which will be followed by a clash against Tanzania on Thursday, 4 December at the Molepolole Stadium. They will complete their group stages campaign when they face Zambia on Saturday, 6 December at the same match venue.

Luvhengo has also wished luck to the South African Under 23 National Team which is in Morocco for the CAF Under 23 Championship.

“We want to wish Shakes Mashaba and the boys well during the CAF Under 23 tournament taking place in Morocco, we would like to say are fully standing behind them during their Olympic qualifying campaign. We have faith and trust that they will come back victorious,” said Luvhengo.
