SAFA has appointed experienced junior coach Solly Luvhengo to lead the national Under-20 side to the 2011 Metropolitan COSAFA Under-20 Youth Championships to be held in Botswana from December 1-10.
Luvhengo has previously coached the men’s national Under-17 side, and also led the women’s Under-17 team, Abantwana, to the 2010 FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup held in Trinidad & Tobago last year.
His exploits with both those sides earned him the SAFA Coach of the Year prize in 2010 and he has now been tasked with reviving the men’s Under-20 team after what has been a disappointing 18 months for the side.
Their loss to Lesotho in the qualifiers for the 2011 African Youth Championships was a blow, but they competed anyway after South Africa was awarded the hosting of the event when Libya withdrew.
Khabo Zondo was in charge for the qualification failure, as well as a first round exit at the 2010 Metropolitan COSAFA Under-20 Youth Championships after losses to Lesotho and Namibia.
Maqsood Chenia then took the team to the African Youth Championships, but they also went out in the group stages, and so Luvhengo becomes the third coach in under a year for the beleaguered Amajita.
Luvhengo’s CV also includes a stint with National First Division side Winners Park which lasted just four months between August 2009 and January 2010
