As four South African clubs begin their journey this weekend seeking continental glory in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) acting Chief Executive, Mato Madlala said she was confident the quartet will make the country proud on the field.
Madlala said it was important for South African clubs to do well in CAF competitions.
“We know that our clubs take continental competitions very seriously and we appreciate their commitment to fly the country’s flag high in CAF tournaments.
“We believe that the performance of our clubs in these continental competitions is also key in the fortunes of our senior national team, Bafana Bafana. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them luck and I hope they will represent us well and advance further. The PSL and the country is behind them,” Madlala said.
Reigning Absa Premiership champions, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs will play in the CAF Champions League while Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits will compete in the CAF Confederations Cup competition.
Mamelodi Sundowns will play Zimbabwean side, Chicken Inn on Saturday (February 13) in Bulawayo while Kaizer Chiefs will be in Comoros to play Volcan Club de Moroni on Sunday (February 14)
Ajax Cape Town travel to Angola for their Confederations Cup tie against Sagrada Esperanca on Saturday (February 13). On the same day, Bidvest wits will be in Seychelles to play Lightstars FC.
