FOOTBALL fans woke up this morning to the sad news of the passing away of former Orlando Pirates and Santos defender, Zvenyika Makonese
The wayward central defender is reportedly to have died from injuries after he was involved in an accident on his way back to South Africa from home in Zimbabwe.
The Zibabwean central defender who first graced our shores in 2004 when he joined Santos where he played until 2009 from the Zimbabwean side, Shabanie Mine where he played for one season was without a club after Pirates released him.
Born in Chiredzi, Zimbabwe on July 7, Makonese’s football skills has seen him feature in a number of the Zimbabwean senior national team, the Warriors and he was part of the team which participated in Africa Cup of Nations in 2006. His outstanding performance during that year’s AFCON almost landed him a contract with Stoke City after some impressive trials with the club.
Makonese’ good work was however spoilt by his bad off-field life-style that included a disappearing act that could have been the reason Pirates released him from the club. This after he disappeared from the club without a trace after a Christmas break this year.
