KATLEGO Mashego made his intension to challenge the Absa Premiership’s Golden Boot Award clear when he scored his 11th league goal of the season during Moroka Swallows’ away 1-0 victory over the unpredictable Maritzburg United last night in Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Not only did the goal brought Swallows back to the top eight finish hopes, but it has also seen them moving three places up on the log to the 7th position while at the same time giving Mashego an opportunity of narrowing the goal gap between himself and the current league’s leading goal-scorer, Bernard Parker who has 12 goals.
The victory by the Dube Birds has also brough relieve to the coach himself, Zeca Marques after the club’s back to back two defeat, first a 2-1 away to bottom of the rock side Chippa United on April 17 before they could go down 3-1 to pacesetters, Kaizer Chiefs at home on April 20.
As for Mashego, it is no doubt that he is crossing his fingers that Parker doesn’t see the back of the net during Chiefs’ home league match against second placed, Platinum Stars whom they host tomorrow afternoon at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.
Another player who is also challenging the Golden Boot award include Maritzburg United’s Cuthbert Malatjila with 9 goals with five more players such as Mogakolodi Ngele (Platinum Stars), Mame Niang (Pretoria University), Bennet Chenene (Swallows) and Rodney Ramagalela also having an outside chance of challenging the title with 8 goals each.
