So there’s not much that BMW have to do to flog their product – with those sleek looks, and the street presence it wields, it pretty much speaks for itself.
But a Car of the Year victory certainly does much to cement the 5-Series’ reputation as the best in the business.
The diesel duo – the 530d and Polo 1.6TDI – swiped the top spot in the Car of the Year competition, facilitated by Wesbank and the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ).
Now while the Volkswagen Polo might be a more accessible prosposition for the South African car-buying public, most of us would probably have to save up for a while in order to afford the BMW 5-Series. Still – the Beemer is something to aspire to owning one day.
This is not the first time the BMW 5-Series has driven away with the Car of the Year accolade on its bonnet. In the year 1990, the BMW 525i grabbed the title and the BMW 528i scooped it in 1997. In total, BMW has taken away 6 SAGMJ Car of the Year titles in the 26-year-long history of the competition.
Naturally, those at BMW were proud that the 5-series had won.
“An award of this nature represents the highest possible praise from the most experienced car critics in the country. I am extremely proud to accept this award on behalf of BMW South Africa. However, it is an award that belongs to the incredible designers, engineers and inventors that work for BMW now, and that have worked for BMW over the years, ” said Bodo Donauer, Managing Director of BMW South Africa in his speech at the Car of the Year ceremony on March 8.
The 3.0-litre powerplant nestling beneath the hood of the BMW 530d produces 180-kilowatts and 540 Newton-metres of torque. According to BMW, it will accelerate to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and will achieve a top speed figure of 250 km/h.
In terms of saftey, the BMW 5-Series scored a 5-star Euro-NCAP rating and according to a press release, it recently received “the highest safety rating ever awarded by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).”
It would be an amazing feat for the 5-Series, if it were to also be awarded with the 2011 World Car of the Year title – because it really doesn’t get much better than that, being the best in the world.
The 5-Series is a contender, and the winners are set to be announced on April 21, at the New York International Auto Show.
