Mosimane impressed by his overseas based players

Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has described as successful his trip abroad where he went to watch several national team players in action.

Mosimane left South Africa on October 29 and arrived back in the country on Monday night, November 01.

Mosimane in Belgium watching from the stands when Lierse FC played to a 2-2 draw against Uepen on Saturday night October.

All three South African players, defender Siboniso Gaxa and midfielders Daylon Claasen and Lance Davids, were in action for Lierse FC.

On Sunday, Mosimane was again a spectator when Bafana Bafana defender Anele Ngcongca’s Racing Genk lost 2-1 at home to Anderlecht.

“I was impressed to see that all guys played, not only that but also the fact that they played 90 minutes each. It is encouraging to see our players taking the field regularly as it keeps them in tip top condition when they come to the national team. In the case of Ngcongca he is playing for a big team, and I was able to speak to some people from his club and they are impressed with him. They want to keep him longer, and that is great news,” said the Bafana Bafana coach.

Mosimane had also intended to travel to England to watch another South African, Davide Somma, who plays for Leeds United in the Championship Division. Somma has been scoring regularly for his club and has caught the attention of the national team coach.

“The main purpose of the trip was to go watch as many players as possible, including Somma, but I heard that he won’t be playing this past weekend so I ended up not going to England. This is one of the many visits we will be making to watch our players abroad. This time I had a punishing schedule and only ended up watching two matches. I would have loved to stay and watch more players but I had to come back to prepare for the Nelson Mandela Challenge match against the USA in two weeks time. Having not seen Somma in action does not mean he is out of contention for the friendly in Cape Town, I might bring him down to have a closer look at him, but that is something I am still discussing with my technical team. Time and schedule permitting, I will go back and watch more players because it’s important to visit these players abroad and not just wait for them to come to Bafana Bafana,” said Mosimane.

The squad to face the USA will be announced on Wednesday, November 10.
