KNOWLEDGE Musona is bound to remember his maiden PSL season as one of his best – the young Kaizer Chiefs striker has been voted the Jet Club Rookie of the year of the 2009/10 football season, winning the whooping R50 000 that goes with the title.
The 20-year-old beat strong local opposition including Orlando Pirates star Andile Jali, Thandani Ntshumayelo of Supersport United, Sibusiso Vilakazi (Bidvest Wits), Siyanda Xulu (Mamelodi Sundowns), Auguston Leornard (Moroka Swallows), Matthew Pattison (Mamelodi Sundowns) and Thabo Mongalo (Supersport United) to lift the rookie crown. He has made an indelible mark in the elite league and is hoping to maintain his current form throughout the upcoming season to ensure he keeps his place in the Kaizer Chiefs starting line-up.
Musona has been a threat to both defenders and goalkeepers alike since he signed with Kaizer Chiefs at the beginning of the 2008/2009 season. While Musona scored only five times, he is still regarded by many as the best young talent of the Naturena-based side.
He scored a vital goal for his club during the Telkom knockout final against Ajax Cape Town, leading them to become the champions for the second season in a row. Musona’s agility and skill on the pitch on that day convinced many a sceptics of his talent.
Musona is a product of Aces Youth Soccer Academy. With plenty of talent and no lack of confidence, his rise to fame came last season during the Metropolitan Under-20 Cosafa Youth Challenge in Kimberly, Northern Cape where he gave an outstanding performance. In that tournament, he scooped the Top Goal-Scorer award with five goals. It did not take long for his efforts and dedication to be noticed – he was soon signed up by Kaizer Chiefs, alongside team-mate Zhiamu Jambo.
After 9 years of supporting young and upcoming talent, this will be the final PSL Jet Club Rookie award as Jet Club will not be sponsoring this initiative going forward.
“It is with regret that Jet Club has had to relinquish the Jet Club Rookie awards,” said Garth Napier, Marketing and Business Strategy Executive for Discount Division, Edcon. We have been involved with supporting young, up & coming football stars for 9 years and previous PSL Jet Club Rookies have gone on to play for Bafana Bafana and have represented South Africa at National level.
“While this programme has been highly successful, as Jet Club we believe it is time to shift our investment into other programmes. We will take the next year to review our social investments and identify programmes we would like to support going forward.”
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the PSL and all the Clubs for supporting our initiative, all the Rookies that have won over the years, the Media and the football public for supporting us over the past 9 years”.
