THE greatest honour bestowed upon a football supporter, is to accompany your team onto the soccer pitch before the start of a match.
That is exactly what the Orlando Pirates did on Saturday when 22 bright-eyed children from Ennerdale SOS Children’s Villages accompanied them onto the field for their match against Mamelodi Sundowns.
“It is something that the kids really enjoy,” says Mickey Modisane, the spokesman for Orlando Pirates Football Club. “They have seen these icons on TV and to be that close to someone you admire and idolise is something that will be immortalised in the hearts and minds of these children,” he adds.
A picture says a thousand words as the excited children from Ennerdale posed with the Orlando Pirates for the official line-up photo. Once the formalities were concluded, the children were led off the field to an area just behind the team bench where they watched the game and cheered for their team.
“The children were so excited about the game, they could not sleep,” says Lilja Lakic from SOS Children’s Villages. “For them this has been nothing short of a dream come true and we would like to sincerely thank the Orlando Pirates for making their dreams a reality.”
“Adopting SOS Children’s Villages for our mascot program is a natural fit for us,” says Modisane. “It provides a chance for us to give back, laying the foundations for future football players in South Africa. We have always had a relationship with SOS Children’s Villages and we are hoping
that this, along with the 30 pairs of shoes that we donated to the children, will serve as an inspiration to them and will hold a special place in their hearts,” he concludes.
