THE Nedbank Cup final will be coming back to Johannesburg this year after a successful final hosted at Mbombela Stadium last year.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced today that Soweto’s Orlando Stadium will host the 2011/2012 Nedbank Cup final on May 26.
For the first time, the Nedbank Cup final will be played at night with the kick-off scheduled for 20h15.
This will be the second final to be played at the refurbished Orlando Stadium – a venue traditionally referred to as the spiritual home of South African football.
PSL CEO, Stan Matthews said: “As the League, we are excited about this game going to Orlando Stadium. The last time we had a final there back in 2009/2010 season, the support from the fans was phenomenal and overwhelming.
“This year, we are aiming for a similar if not better experience. We want to make this final not just a football festival, but a memorable event that will be value for money for the fans who will be coming to watch the final. It’s important for the football family to book their tickets early.”
The PSL and Nedbank have planned a number of pre and post-match activities that will ensure a memorable occasion for the fans. Details of this are still to be confirmed and will be announced closer to the final.
“The Nedbank Cup final is a celebration of our five year relationship with the PSL and more importantly our relationship with the soccer loving public of South Africa. Nedbank is looking forward to making things happen for finalists and for the fans by creating a truly memorable event on 26 May,” says Andy Scott, Head of Nedbank Group Sponsorships.
Four teams are still in the running for a place in the final. They are: AmaZulu, inaugural Nedbank Cup champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Free State Stars and SuperSport United.
Ticket details for the final will be announced later; however fans are reminded that tickets for this weekend’s semi finals are currently on sale.
