Pirates claim win over City in TKO

ORLANDO Pirates came from a goal behind to beat Polokwane City 2-1 in a Telkom Knockout Last 16 match at Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It was a lively opening 20 minutes as both teams pushed forward in attack in what was a high-paced affair.

Pirates had the first real chance on goal in the ninth minute when Lehlohonolo Majoro broke behind the Polokwane defence and drove into the box, but his shot from 16-yards was well-saved by the keeper.

Polowane, though, took the lead in the 15th minute courtesy of a Tokelo Langa thunderbolt from long range that took a slight deflection to beat the keeper, 1-0.

Pirates, however, were not to be outdone and hit back three minutes later after Issa Sarr headed home a Mpho Makola corner-kick, 1-1.

The game fell into a bit of a dull patch after that as both sides squandered possession and could not add to their goal tally before the break.

The start of the second half saw the Buccaneers turning the screw, but their finishing in front of goal was poor.

Three minutes into the second half some good build-up play saw Makola in space 16-yards out, but his shot skimmed the wrong side of the post.

Ten minutes later Majoro met a left-wing cross from Makola, but his header also went narrowly wide.

In the 68th minute Pirates made their pressure tell when Thabo Qalinge turned home a low cross from Majoro from 14-yards out in emphatic fashion, 2-1.

Polokwane tried to fight their way back into the game and came close to levelling matters in the 75th minute when a 24-yard free-kick from Jabulani Maluleke was superbly saved by Senzo Meyiwa.

Pirates slowed down the game after that and played possession football as they move into the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout competition.
