Polokwane City put the smile back to Limpopo fans after earning promotion to the bigger league

FOOTBALL fans in Limpopo will still be represented come the 2013/14 Absa Premiership season.

This after Polokwane City of Ga-Ntamatisi village in Zebediela outside Polokwane beat Roses United 1-0 this afternoon to finished on top of the National First Division (NFD’s) log ahead of favourites, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Thanda Royal Zulu and Santos.

The latest development comes hardly a day after another Limpopo side, Black Leopards were relegated to the NFD following their string of poor results in the elite league. Polokwane City’s automatic promotion comes as a relieve for the province which was once boasting of two promising clubs such as the same Leopards and Dynamos with the likes of Winners Park and City Pillars as the most promising side in the NFD after the two sides came close to earn promotion but only to lose out in the NFD’s Promotional Play-Offs.

The promotion for Polokwane City is an emotional one after the club lost four of its players five months ago in an accident which happened at Nobody village, just few kilometres from University of the North’s Oscar Mphetha in Turfloop (Mankweng) outside Polokwane where they were coming from their home league match against FC AK. The club had to be out of action for some weeks while mourning their players and were later involved in some hectic catch-up matches which at some stage no one gave them a chance of making it to the top as most had tipped the likes of Mpumalanga Black Aces and Thanda Royal Zulu to win the league as the two exchanged the top spot for the better part of the season until they were recently joined by Santos who finished second after today’s matches following their 2-1 victory over Jomo Cosmos.
