POLOKWANE City pulled all the stops to stung Mamelodi Sundowns with a 1-0 drubbing to registered their first-ever victory in five league matches 8 matches.
Despite the Brazilians’ classic performance last night at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo’s capital city, Polokwane, the home side kept of pilling the pressure and it came as no surprise when Tebogo Langerman scored an own goal in the heat of the moment in the 43rd minute. This was Langerman was trying to clear a cross by City’s Galabwe Moyana.
Ironically Sundowns came to this match highly motivated after scoring 11 goals from their past two matches that saw them beat Bloemfontein Celtic 4-1 in the quarter-finals of the Telkom Knockout before they could beat AmaZulu 7-1 in the league match.
Arise and Shine as City are affectionally known had to suffer as early as the 13th minute when Billiant Khama came close to put the Brazilians in the lead but his shot went astray with goalkeeper, Modiri Marumo well beaten.
Sundowns came to the spot again and this time with Bongani Zungu, but his fine header went wide. This after Zungu had received an excellent cross from Dove Wome in the 21st minute.
Sundowns pulled pressure searching for the leading goal on several occasions with the forward men throwing everything in their disposal but found Marumo equally to the task between the poles.
The victory was a good sign of good things to come for the newly appointed coach, Bobbie Solomons whose first game against BidVest Wits ended in a goalless draw on Wednesday night.
