Renault South Africa’s resolve to market cars that deliver sporty appeal at affordable prices has led to the introduction of a new version of the Clio, to be known as the Renault Clio ‘S’.This spirited new model features an overtly sporty character, look and feel, thanks to a competitively-priced package of exclusive and distinctive design details. These make it ideally suited to dynamic, image-conscious buyers that place an overriding emphasis on distinctive style and great value in their purchasing decisions.
“The Renault Clio remains one of the most competitive cars in the market, and is the reference in its segment in terms of standard features,” explains Renault SA managing director, Xavier Gobille.”While the Clio RS is undoubtedly one of the most exciting hot hatches available today, the launch of the sporty Clio S allows us to satisfy the demand for a feature-packed, value-added model that embodies the spirit and trend-setting style of Renault’s sporting flagships, but at a much more accessible price point.
“We believe the Clio S will appeal to young but discerning, trendy buyers that aspire to owning a Clio RS, yet are seeking a competitive and truly distinctive offering within their budget.”
STYLING: Spirited and sporty
Entering the market as the fourth derivative in the Clio range (augmenting the high-spec 1.6 Dynamique, the exhilarating 2.0 Renault Sport and the 1.6 Dynamique Automatic), the Clio S features a practical five-door configuration. And yet, it remains overtly sporty with more than a hint of Renault’s motorsport lineage. The newcomer delivers a bold visual statement, due to the fitment of racy white, multi-spoke Canasta 16-inch alloy rims, fitted with 195/50 R16 tyres. These endow the Clio S with an unmistakably purposeful and athletic persona. The striking wheels are complemented by white exterior mirrors, with the same treatment applied to the bold front bumper insert (flanked on either side by integrated fog lamps) and the rear lip spoiler.
The arresting ‘S’ package is rounded off with dark-tinted rear windows, as well as white ‘S’ decals that run along the doors and across the roof, ensuring that this Clio certainly stands out from the crowd. The predominantly sporty feel of the Clio is assertively echoed in the lively interior, effectively using the juxtaposition of black and white features to lend a racy edge to the cabin. In keeping with the ‘S’ theme, the dashboard trim, instrument dials, centre console and lateral trim are all picked out in white.
Similarly, the bespoke seats incorporate an eye-catching ‘S’-embossed dark cloth upholstery boasting a classic white chequered pattern, with further ‘S’ badging on the door sills rounding off its exclusive appeal.Three exciting colour choices are available for the Clio S at launch, all of which effectively highlight this unique model’s stand-out features. They comprise Capsicum Red, Extreme Blue and Pearl Black.
EQUIPMENT: Exceptional value
Based on the Expression equipment level, the Clio S is positioned at the entry level of the current Clio range, yet boasts a genuinely impressive list of luxury, convenience and safety features as standard equipment.Indeed, besides the obvious sporty ambience, the Clio S owner is treated to an almost full-house list of items that is well above the class norm. The standard specification includes air-conditioning, cruise control,a multi-function computer, electric front windows, remote central locking, power steering and electrically adjustable, heated mirrors.
Additionally, both the driver’s seat and steering wheel are height-adjustable, thus making it easy to dial in the ideal driving position. The use of leather trim for the steering wheel and gear lever add a further upmarket touch.Renault’s integrated MP3-compatible CD receiver is featured is also included, and can be accessed via the popular and intuitive fingertip audio controls located on a control pod on the steering column just behind the steering wheel. RCA stereo auxiliary inputs for external audio devices are situated below the radio in the centre console.
SAFETY: No compromise
Renault’s unwavering approach to active and passive safety is evident in the top-notch safety arsenal incorporated as standard in the Clio S. It all starts with the standard Clio III platform, which is already an established recipient of a coveted five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Building on this, the Clio S is equipped with a full complement of airbags. These comprise dual front airbags, side airbags for the front seat occupants, curtain airbags, and Renault’s innovative anti-sliding airbags incorporated into the base of the front seats. Rear head restraints are also provided, along with Isofix child seat anchor points.
On the active safety front, the driver can rely on the latest Bosch 8.0 ABS anti-lock braking system with discs all round (vented in front). This is allied to Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Emergency Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) in order to achieve the optimum braking performance in all conditions. In terms of vehicle protection, the central locking system is coupled to an auto-locking function on pull-off, while the Renault Anti-Intrusion Device (RAID) ensures cutting-edge anti-theft security.
PERFORMANCE: Dynamic efficiency
The Renault Clio S employs the familiar 1 598 cc 16-valve engine used in the current Clio Dynamique – a powerplant that is renowned for its sprightly performance and outstanding efficiency. It produces 83 kW of power at 6 000 r/min, matched to a solid 151 Nm of torque at 4 250 r/min. Linked to a five-speed transmission, this enables the Clio S to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10,2 sec and attain a top speed of 190 km/h.
The in-gear tractability of this unit is certainly one of its endearing features, making it ideally suited to both urban commuting and more enthusiastic driving. The Clio S also scores highly in terms of fuel consumption, using an average of just 6,7 litres/100 km of unleaded in the combined cycle, and dropping to as low as 5,4 litres/100 km on the open road. Allied to this frugal appetite is the commendably low CO2 emissions rating of just 160 g/km.Equally, with a kerb weight of just 1 150 kg, the Clio S delivers responsive and entertaining handling dynamics. It relies on the sure-footed precision of the independent MacPherson strut-based front suspension, which includes a 20,5 mm anti-roll bar.
The rear configuration consists of a torsion beam axle, allied to coil springs and an integrated anti-roll bar. This is complemented by a variable-rate electric power steering system that delivers accurate feel, feedback and control on challenging driving routes, along with the agility and lightweight ease-of-use for more mundane driving tasks.
VALUE: A compelling package
Despite the unique sporting proposition and exceptionally high level of standard features offered by the Clio S, it convincingly lives up to Renault South Africa’s mandate of offering sporty appeal at affordable pricing. At a recommended retail price of R179 900, the Renault Clio S is truly in a class of its own.
Adding further value is the inclusion of a standard three-year/60 000 km Service Plan, as well as Renault’s five-year/150 000 km warranty, which now applies across the entire range. This is fully backed by Renault Confiance, an all-encompassing care package specifically designed to ensure continued peace-of-mind motoring. Scheduled services are at 15 000 km intervals.
Renault’s efforts to continually improve dealer sales and after-sales service continue to pay dividends, ensuring that the ownership experience matches the excellence of the Renault product offering.
