South Africa will be represented at the 14th CAF Cahmpionsh League final between Esperance of Tunisia and TP Mazembe (DR Congo).

The South African flag will be flown high by Daniel Bennet, who will be the referee. He will be assisted by Zakhele Siwela and Luyanda Somi while Besit ebrahim will be the fourth official.

Bennett features among the top ten referees on the CAF referees list, which includes another South African Jerome Damon, who has also made several international appearances including the recent 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament. Bennett’s call up comes almost immediately after the appointment of Nomvula Masilela to officiate in the 7th CAF African Women’s Championship which takes place in South Africa from Sunday, 31 October 2010 to 14 November. The head of the Safa’s referees department, Adeel Carelse, has congratulated the quarted.

“The appointment of the four South African officials to the CAF Champions League is another marvellous achievement for the Association. This has been a fantastic year for our referees, it speaks volumes about match officials coming out of South Africa. FIFA and CAF have shown a huge amount of confidence in our referees and we should be proud of our achievements. We are always striking to produce quality, world class officials,” said Carelse.

Carelse added that the Association will be sending some top officials to an elite CAF referees’ course at the end of November 2010.

“We have a development plan for our young and upcoming referees, including the youth development plan in place that is being spread throughout the regions and provinces of our country. We are also trying to strengthen the base, starting with our Vodacom and SAB leagues referees. Our efforts are starting to take shape and we have deployed five new young referees to FIFA. Our hard work is starting to bear fruit but we still have lots do in the field of refereeing” said Carelse.
