Schalk Brits re-joins Stormers for Semi-final

FORMER Stormers hooker Schalk Brits has re-joined the Stormers ahead of their Super Rugby Semi-final against the Crusaders.

Brits plays for Saracens club in England who have agreed to release on loan to the Stormers with immediate effect.

The Stormers have suffered a series of injuries ahead of the Super XV semi-final against the Crusaders in Cape Town on Saturday, and the Premiership champions were pleased to assist in a time of need.

Brits, man of the match in last month’s Premiership final, trained with the Stormers squad on Monday.

Sanzar rules state that all players must have played in at least four matches of Super Rugby to be eligible to play in the knock out stages but Sanzar makes exceptions for specialist positions.

The Stormers have however somehow managed to convince SANZAR to allow Brits to play not as a hooker but as a loose forward after No 8 Duane Vermeulen was injured two weeks ago.

“We wanted a player with the x-factor and Brits brings that to the team,” Coetzee told Sport24.

“SANZAR has given him permission to play as a loose forward and not as a hooker.

“Our problem was at loose forward and Brits has played there before for the Stormers.

“He won’t have a problem playing that role because he’s been playing like a loose forward, even though he’s been throwing in the ball at the line-outs and competed in the scrums for Saracens.

“We were looking for player like Nick Koster who could make an impact when coming off the substitutes’ bench and Brits has that ability.”
