Second group of CAF B Licence coaching course kicks off

BY NAKAMPE LEKWADU

THE second group of the CAF B Licence Coaching course is currently underway at the Lido Hotel, in Eikenhof south of Johannesburg. The course started on yesterday and comes to an end this coming Friday.

This week-long course has been put together by the South African Football Association (SAFA) in conjunction with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

It is headed by FIFA and CAF instructor Ulrich Mathiot from the Seychelles and will cover topics like modern trends in football; physical demands in the game; mental toughness in football and the art of match observation and reading of the game.

The second group has 34 participants largely made up of former players like Helman Mkhalele (Orlando Pirates); Dennis Lota (Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows); Sipho Khuse and Patrick Mabedi (both Kaizer Chiefs). Other participants include Themba Sithole (Free State Stars), Allan Freeze (Platinum Stars), Ian Gorowa and Floyd Mogale (both Mamelodi Sundowns), Anna Monate and Jerry Laka (both SAFA).

“We are excited that most of you have taken an interest in attending this course, and this augurs for the development of the game in our country. It is not good when former players say they want to go into coaching but are not willing to take the journey of empowering themselves. This is a great step you have taken and I am confident that in years to come we will see the positive results. This course normally takes 20 days but we have structured it in a way that we put in more hours and pack everything in one week. But from next year we will go the full distance,” said Serame Letsoaka, Technical Director at SAFA.

The coaches attending the course hold the Level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications in South Africa, but CAF has sent an assessor to see if they are capable because Level 1 and 2 is the equivalent of the CAF B coaching licence. To effect assessment of these coaches a refresher course of five days is implemented because through Level 1 and 2 the coaches have covered the number of hours needed for a CAF B licence. SAFA is excited about the course.

“The time has come for us South Africans to do something for our country, and it is very encouraging when former players raise their hands to show their eagerness to take this country to greater heights. We must stop talking about development and do the business so we can make some improvement to our development structures. I told the first group last week that SAFA has set up policies that from 2012/13 no person will be allowed to coach in the Castle League and Vodacom leagues without the recognised qualifications. CAF has also put in place rules that from the year 2013 no coach will be allowed to coach on the continent without the correct coaching qualifications,” said Fanyana Sibanyoni, SAFA National Executive Committee member and also chairperson of the Technical Committee. The first group has since received their certificates last Friday.

Former South African striker with Moroka Swallows and now television analyst Mike Mangena has been invited as a guest.
