JUAN Heunis of the South West District was the toast of Day 1 in the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week when he finished as the highest scorer in this 16-clubs cricket tournament which is under-way at the University of North West in Potchefstroom.
The Langenhoven Gymnasium member who celebrated his 16th year birthday on September 13 wrapped his glorious day on a colourful note when he scored 92 runs, hitting 8 fours and 5 sixes while at the crease against Mpumalanga in the match which ended in a draw.
Juan who play as an all-rounder only missed out a century before he was caught by Sizwe Zwane off Max Khoza’s (3/46) bowling. For the record, the scoreboard between the two sides at the end of the day read: South West District 228/6 and 193/7 for Mpumalanga.
The other highlight of the day was when spin- bowlers, Kwa-Zulu Natal’s Sohail Mahmood and Shaakir Abrahams (Eastern Province) managed to grab six and five-wicket haul respectively.
Eastern Province went on to beat KZN on the first innings and thanks to Abrahams’s bowling. Ironically KZN was in a strong position 0n 94/2 before before the latter could cast Abrahams to the deeper end, giving him (5/47) a bowl.
