Steed 5 Is Tough And Smart

By FOCUS REPORTER

AS we have noted before, the Chinese automakers win over buyers with their reasonably priced and well equipped offerings. While in some areas they need time to get on par with more established players, their products, which offer a lot for not too much, are hard to ignore.

The Steed 5 is GWM’s offering for the highly competitive double cab bakkie market. And while it may not dethrone the king, which is the Toyota Hilux as we often see in the sales figures, considering a Steed 5 would be wise because of the value it offers.

Aesthetically it’s a handsome looking bakkie, with a butch – but stylish front end and a square side profile that seems to borrow a few traits from the Isuzu KB Series. Whether this is coincidence or purposeful is open to debate, but the Steed 5 is certainly not bad on the eye. Colour choices include Pearl black, Sky silver, Noble grey, Titanium white and red.

You can choose from 4×4 and 4×2 derivatives, depending on your application. The Steed is also available with diesel or petrol engines. The 2.4-litre petrol engine offers up 100-Kilowatts and 200 Newton metres of torque. The 2.5 TCI model kicks out 80-Kilowatts and a healthy 300 Newton metres of torque while the 2.0 VGT serves up 110-Kilowatts and 310 Newton metres of torque.

Double cab bakkie buyers have come to expect more in terms of interior comfort and convenience. The Steed 5 boasts air-conditioning, electric windows, an audio system with the usual USB and MP3 compatibility as well as “individual bucket seats.” Front driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution and front fog lamps are also thrown in as standard.

And then there is the matter of price. Obviously, it can be expected that a double cab bakkie from more established marques will cost in the late R200 000 region and make their way well past the R300 000 mark. The GWM Steed 5 will cost you R214 900, for the 2.5 TCI 4×2 model and the 4×4 model sells for R234 900. For the entry-level 2.4 MPI 4×2 you’ll pay R198 900 and the 2.4 MPI 4×4 has a price tag of R209 900.
