Sundowns on top of the log

By NAKAMPE LEKWADU

Katlego “Killer” Mphela and Mabhudi Khenyeza’s goals each were enough to give Mamelodi Sundowns a deserving 2-0 away to Platinum Stars on Wednesday night.

This Absa Premiership encounter in Phokeng’s Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg started on a blastering pace with the Brazilians all over the home side, searching for an early lead but it was not meant to be.

Still motivated by their 2-0 victory over Moroka Swallows in the league opener a week ago, Sundowns went on to dictate the proceedings, but only to be denied by Dinaledi goalkeeper, Tapiwa Kapini who stopped Lebogang “Cheese-boy” Mokoena’s early attempt. Tapiwa saved from the former Orlando Pirates striker’s powerful shot from the 20-yards before he could deny Surprise Moriri few minutes later.

Sundowns eventually got it right when Mphela slotted home in the 27th minute to give the Chloorkop-based side the 1-0 lead at half-time.

Stars could have equalised in the 29th minute via unmarked Bradley Grobler, but his header was saved by Calvin Marlin.

Sundowns continued where they left in the second half to dominate the proceedings, but found it difficult to rattle the net.

Khenyeza who was voted Man of the Match sealed Sundowns’ victory with a fine header in the 90th minute. This was the Brazilians’ second victory of the season and they now sit on top of the log with six points.

In another matches, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates bagged one point each after they were held to a 1-1 and goalless draws by Free State Stars and Maritzburg United.

Chiefs’ goal away to United at the Chatsworth Stadium was scored by Knowledge Musona while the home side responded through Rudolf Bester.

At the FNB Stadium a disappointing 5 000 fans turned to the Pirates’ match, and so was the action on the day which saw the mighty Buccaneers missing a number of scoring opportunities with Tlou Segolela as the main culprit.

In Atteridgeville’ Super Stadium, SuperSport United rose to the occasion to register a 2-1 victory over the visiting Mpumalanga Black Ace

Dipsey Selolwane and Tefera Fikru scored for Matsatsantsa A Pitori with Godfrey Ramulondi scoring a consolation goal for AmaZayoni.

The rest of the Absa Premiership results are:

Ajax Cape Town 3 v Moroka Swallows 2, Bloemfontein Celtic 3 v AmaZulu 1, Golden Arrows 2 v Vasco da Gama 0 and Santos 2 v BidVest Wits University 1.
