KAIZER Chiefs’ speeding steam train has finally being brought to a completely halt after the Naturena side surrended their unbeaten with a 2-0 drubbing by SuperSport United.
The mighty Amakhosi who came to this Absa Premiership match which was played in Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night with this past Sunday’s run-away 2-1 victory over Botswana’s Township Rollers in the first round of the CAF Champions League were hoping to stretch their log lead but it was not meant to be as they found Matsatsantsa A Pitori equally ready for them.
Jeremy Brockie and Dove Wome scored all the important goals in the 37th and 91st minutes respectively with former Chiefs’ top striker, Kingston Nkhatha also causing some major havoc to his former side as if he was proving a point that it was a mistake to let him go before time.
This victory saw the Tshwane based side moved to the 6th position on the log with 27 points, one point behind 5th position, Polokwane City.
Before this match, Chiefs were unbeaten in 19 matches with 14 wins and 5 draws, however they are still on top of the log despite this set-back with 47 points from 20 matches. Their closest rivals are now BidVest Wits who reduced their 13 points trail to 10 after they beat relegation candidates, Moroka Swallows 2-0 in another league match played at the Dobsonville Stadium also on Tuesday night to move to the second position.
Apart from Wits, Chiefs’ other threat is Mamelodi Sundowns who are on the third position with 34 points plus an advantage of two games in hand which if they win could see them reduce the 13 points margin to a mere 7. Last season Chiefs were at some stage topping the log with 12 points clear of Sundowns but only to lose the league title which went to the Brazilians who snatched it from them right under their nose.
With these top three clubs being expected to divide their attention between three competitions which is the league, the Nedbank Cup and the continental competition, it remain to be seen which of them will survive.
