SuperSport remain top with win

SUPERSPORT United retained their place at the top of the Absa Premiership and confirmed their growing status as favourites for the title with a 2-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium last night.

Matsatsantsa are still the only unbeaten team after 12 rounds of the league season, as goals from Moffat Mdluli and Tebogo Langerman lifted them to a deserved win over the Amakhosi in Polokwane.

SuperSport started strongly and had early chances through Anthony Laffor and Ashley Hartog, though neither attacker was able to get their efforts on target and trouble Chiefs goalkeeper Arthur Bartman.

The Amakhosi gradually worked themselves into the game and began to probe at United’s defence. On 17 minutes Lehlohonolo Majoro had a chance to open the scoring but rookie goalkeeper Ronwen Williams came up with a good save.

Ten minutes before half time SuperSport went ahead through Moffat Mdluli, with the midfielder taking advantage of some slack defending from Chiefs to score from close range and silence the majority of supporters inside the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

It could have been 2-0 on 43 minutes when Tebogo Langerman had a sight of goal from inside the penalty area, but this time Bartman did enough to block the effort and keep his team within touching distance heading into half time.

Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic made two changes early in the second half, with Abia Nale and Lucky Baloyi coming off the bench to add some vigour and mobility to their midfield. The latter had a good chance to bring the visitors level on 73 minutes but shot wide of the target from a tight angle.

Just a minute later Bernard Parker forced Williams into an excellent save, with the young ‘keeper tipping the Bafana Bafana forward’s shot round his post to keep SuperSport United in the ascendancy.

And Matsatsantsa effectively killed off the game as a contest on 79 minutes when Langerman turned home a cross from substitute Kermit Erasmus to make it 2-0.

Chiefs had a couple of chances late on through youngster George Lebese, but Williams had an answer for every question asked of him and ended the game with a clean sheet.
